Wine expo in new York

As I told severals times, New York is just marketing and the wine expo is a events organised from and for NY wine resellers lobby. Few French wineries, even less Italian and California wines… it doesn’t seem a wine fair. Was nice but wine culture is a different thing; I found a few good wines from Sonoma valley, Finger lakes and from French Rhone valley and nothing more.

The exposition were bad organized and the hosts at the stands didn’t even where the wine come from; in Califorinia you can find much better organization and more friendly people.

My revenge have been testing a terrific duck ham and foie gras from a smal Hudson valley producer.

Late dinner @cavatappo

Thursday night I went to “cavatappo” wine bar and restaurant for a late dinner and this is my review:
15 kind of cheeses on menu is not so bad and with a good quality; cold cuts are regular and an interesting wine list. The main course aren’t anything special and too expensive based on this quality level.
One waiter wasn’t friendly and I got a bad service, but the spot is fair for a late glass of wine and a bite.

A day with a polo match, Chris Bosh and long island wine.

I started with wine tasting in a couple of vineyards along Suffolk county;

First winery Lieb Family Cellars: 8$ for 4 taste isn’t expensive, but the wine was ordinary and the barman didn’t know anything of the wine but was fun. Bottles are expensive (45$ for a blend and 20$ for a Long Island Chardonnay is crazy).

Second winery Pindar Vineyards: 4$ for 5 taste (cheaper), but wine still ordinary and there were hundreds of people (like in a mall) most of them already drunk (1 pm). Do you want to get drunk and have a fun with your friends? You can go; do you want taste wine? Change your destination.

Then I went to watch the first match of the Mercedes Polo Challenge, thousand people for this VIP popular summer event to the Hamptons. Picnic, party, drink, famous people and women with the most fancy and trendy dresses are the most important things in this event, no one was interested in the match; only during the half time, spectators wandered all over the field stomping down the torn up turf, a real British tradition.

But why did I meet Chris Bosh at this event in New York state? He is a new Miami Heat player with the Knicks supporters dream LeBron… Ah yes I know, he teased the NY Knicks supporters who will pay hundreds dollars per game for another season without playoff, dreaming of the next big freelance who will choose another team… Go LAKERS…

Dry Creek Valley Passport

Perfect organization, good wine, great food and friendly winemakers.

Two amazing days in California where I tasted a lot of wines and learned what techniques are used to produce Zinfandel, Cabernet, Pinot noir and many other.

California vineyards are big and flat, the work is easier that in Italy where the most vineyards are on small and impervious hills; this will be a great plus for the future, but for the moment Piedmont, Tuscany and most Italian wines are better.

Trust me.

5pm Armida party “from the heaven to the hell”

Chardonnay ’09 from the heaven, Pinot noir and Zinfandel from the hell(not the right ambienced for the wine “una americanata”….). Nice place and big party, but the quality of the wine isn’t special and selling the future of chardonnay and zin (2 years before bottling) is crazy.

Sunday 4th stop Schlumberger and Rafanelli

Schlumberger: mexican ambiance, nice spot and good wine. In the private room the sauvage ’06 (blend with syrah, petit syrah and viogner) was perfect for my mouth; Cab ’98 and ’91 are great.
Rafanelli: US wine and italian food. Only 2 wines, both of them regular but the food was great, especially the desserts.

Sunday 2nd stop Zichichi and Gopfrich

Zichichi : zinfandel and petit syrah ’09 and ’06. The petit syrah ’09 will be great in 2/3 years. Gopfrich : rose’, merlot, syrah and zinfandel
Small wineries with good wine.

Martorana: Mid-west music, great pizza and nice cave. The chardonnay is good, other wines regular.
Quivira: sauvignon blanc is very good (no oak barrel) and Zinfandel ’06 good with a fair price. Good cheese selection.

Sunday 11am first winery BELLA

Amazing location, safari ambiance, band play relaxing music. Great cave inside the hill and 6 types of zinfandel. Lilly hill zin ’08 and late harvest zin ’08 are awesome

Sunday 11am first stop Bella winery

Amazing location, band play relaxing music cave inside, safari ambiance.
